Car Talk was born from a simple idea: what if speaking up could feel like play instead of pressure?
For children with selective mutism — an anxiety-based condition where kids are able to speak comfortably in some settings (like home) but find it incredibly hard to speak in others (like school or with new people) — using their voice can feel overwhelming. Therapy often involves gentle, gradual practice of making sounds and words in low-stakes situations.
That’s exactly what Car Talk is built around. Every “Yum!”, “Left!”, and “Stop!” is a tiny, joyful victory. The car responds. The game cheers. The child sees that their voice makes things happen — and that using it can be safe, silly, and fun. It’s voice practice disguised as a giggle-fest.
